USA 2009 – San Francisco Day 7

I’m writing this at about 6pm US CST sitting in our place in New Orleans.

Pat thought it’d be a nice idea to get a car for our last day in California and head out away from the city and have a look around, so we were packed cleaned up and bit farewell to 139 Pierce Street by 10am.

It’s a pity the weather had other ideas. It was cold and drizzly for the entire day, which kind of stymied our plans for getting out and about too much.

We headed first for “The Presidio” a former military base which has been converted to a national park, but because of all of the pre-existing military housing is also a residential area.

We stayed in the car and did a quick drive by of Crissy Field and Fort Point before we wound our way back to the Golden Gate Bridge and headed across the bay to Sausalito again the weather kept us in the car, but we did drive by a “floating house community” which was pretty weird, they’re a bit like houseboats, but without the “boat” function so if you want to move them you need to have them towed.

From Sausalito we headed to Muir Woods where despite the weather we got out of the car and did a short walk amongst the redwoods (although they didn’t look that red to me) and took the obligatory monument photo.

From Muir Woods we headed to Sonoma where we grabbed some lunch and a souvenir for Kevin.

We thought about some wine tasting, but decided against it for a the following reasons:

  1. They were charging anywhere from $5-20 just for tasting
  2. Tasting was done in shopfront tasting rooms not the actual wineries
  3. We decided that we didn’t really like Californian wines that much, and would probably just complain about them

We headed off to Berkeley which by the time we got there was dark It looked like a really interesting college town though. Here we found ourselves a bar and holed up for a few hours playing Uno and Pass the Pigs before grabbing some Lebanese takeaway and heading for the airport for our 12.35am flight to New Orleans via Houston.

Bye, bye California..
